Tanning FAQs
Tanning is often misunderstood, so we get asked lots of questions. Here you can read some of the questions we get asked most frequently. If you need an answer that’s not on the list, just give us a call or pop in to the salon.
How long should I tan for?
We recommend 6 min sessions fair skin, 8-10 min sessions for medium skin, and 10-14 mins for dark skin. At least 48 hours between sessions is recommended
Why is light therapy better than standard?
You’ll still achieve the same high-level tanning, but with the added benefits of using light properties for associated conditions and health matters
Will my skin go dry?
UV can dry out your skin, so you should always apply moisturising lotion. We stock a specialist range of lotions specifically for UV treatments
Does using sunbeds cause skin cancer?
Exposure to any UV comes with associated risks, however actual midday sunshine outside not only burns the skin but is proven to be a greater risk.
Should I close my eyes?
Keeping your eyes closed will not offer enough eye protection, and goggles should be worn at all times when tanning.
Should I wear sunscreen?
Sunscreen will block out the UV light which activates melanin to give you your tan, so the use of sunscreens will make your tanning sessions ineffective.
I’ve just had a tattoo. Will it be ok?
You should wait at least until the tattoo is fully healed, and preferably up to 6 weeks before you start tanning sessions. When you do start, covering the tattoo with a strong sunblock should help to prevent premature fading.
What are the benefits of tanning?
UV light gives you much needed vitamin D, something many people in the UK are lacking. UV and light therapy will also increase the production of serotonin, a mood elevating hormone – and it can be particularly useful in the fight against seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis, and Acne have all been treated with UV light.
